Old and Faded Murals Changed Their Clothes to New

Shincheonji Volunteer Geoje Branch proceeded with the volunteer project ‘Wall Story’. They brought walls to life by painting them under the theme of ‘hometown’ and ‘memories’. The villagers were touched by the murals.

[Geoje Internet Broadcast]= “Old murals were faded and erased, but since you painted new murals, Cheonggok Village feels different and lively now. The villagers love them, too. Thank you very much for painting the walls.”

Kim Hwangu, Head of Sadeung-myeon of Geoje City in Gyeongnam province of Korea, said this while repeatedly thanking them, to volunteers who brought back life to the village.

Shincheonji Volunteer Geoje Branch ran a wall painting volunteer project with around 160 volunteers from 16th June to 4th for about 50 days in Cheonggok Village, Sadeoung-myeon, Geoje City, in Gyengnam province, Korea.

Shincheonji Volunteer Geoje Branch has been running the project, and the project was run 10 times this year. The activity aims to bring life to the old walls and lead residents to communicate with each other, and it’s a voluntary task to express the characteristics of the region and the stories of the residents through the murals.

Cheonggok Village, located in Geoje City, Gyeongnam province, once painted murals to change the atmosphere of the village, but now, the murals were erased as time passed. Even worse, the cluttered environment around the fishing village gave an unorganized and dark feeling. Hearing this, Shincheonji Volunteer made a promise to the village foreman to voluntarily provide the mural paintings on the walls, and the project kicked off in the middle of June.

Shincheonji Volunteer Geoje Branch painted the walls with white at first, then, redecorated them with the paintings under the theme of “Hometown, and the memories with families.” They expressed touching messages such as the sea and the sky that took care of children, who were the dreams of their parents; meaning the place where the parents are their hometown.

The village foreman of Cheonggok Village thanked saying, “It was great that the elders could feel the nostalgia, thinking of their hometowns. Whenever I go to the government office, I spread the word about Shincheonji’s deeds. They sincerely carried out the tasks, and even wrapped it up nicely, even in the hot weather. I appreciate your mural painting volunteer job.”

A villager expressed gratefulness saying, “I admired them seeing them working hard for the volunteer job, even in the hot weather.” The other villager said, “Thanks to the murals, the backgrounds of the paths when I pass through the village are now beautiful, and the village is even brighter now.”

A volunteer who participated in the project said, “Whenever the touch was added, red, pink, and yellow flowers were painted. It was so beautiful. I felt like I’m a main character of a pretty fairytale. I was happy to join this volunteer job, and the job was rewarding when I saw the villagers became happy as the mural was gradually completed.”

Shincheonji Volunteer officials said, “We are grateful for volunteers who worked hard in the hot weather, and for villagers who provided cool water and snacks whenever we came to volunteer. We’ll keep being active to serve the local community for its development.”

  1. This is a beautiful post. 100,000 members of Shincheonji took part in a blood drive in South Korea in 2022 to restore the blood crisis that resulted from the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic. It’s very encouraging that young people would sacrifice and serve in this way in today’s day and age #ShincheonjiChurch
