Shincheonji Volunteer’s Devotion of 38 Years

It’s been forty years since Shincheonji Church of Jesus (Shincheonji Church)’s establishment. Shincheonji Volunteer, an organization affiliated with Shincheonji Church, has been working for the local communities around the branch churches (Shincheonji Volunteer organizations were formed in all Shincheonji Church’s branch churches) for 38 years!

According to the volunteer reports provided by Shincheonji Volunteer, 581,905 volunteers served the communities and 750,851 received the volunteer services for seven years, from 2017 to December 2023. Converting the years of the volunteer services to days, they worked for 49,768 days. Adding up the uncollected reports of volunteer services they provided before 2017, it’s an astonishing record of volunteer services for a single volunteer organization.

Shincheonji Church’s first volunteer project dates back to 38 years ago, 1986. The church helped the neighbors in need and promoted South Korea celebrating the 24th Olympics held in Seoul in 1988.

After that, the church served the communities by helping the neighbors in need, purifying the environment, and providing free haircut services, etc. In need of providing organized and professional volunteer services, Shincheonji Volunteer was officially launched in 2011.

2007 was a tough year for the sea of Korea because of the oil spill near Taean, which is the largest oil spill incident in Korea. In the same year, about 30,000 volunteers rushed to recover the coast covered with oil. The volunteers sweated even in the winter cleaning up the oil stain that was absorbed by the rocks and sand.

In 2008, a blood donation volunteer project began, and around 5,000 people donated every year. In 2022, Shincheonji Volunteer renewed Korea’s best record of KRI (Korea Record Institute) for the largest number of blood donors from a single organization within the shortest period, and for donating the most blood donation certificates (donating blood donation certificates deducting expense of the blood transfusion fee. Donating them is very helpful for the hospitals or the patients.). Back then, 18,819 donors from Shincheonji Volunteer participated in the campaign and donated 32,324 blood donation certificates. Shincheonji Volunteer also received a plaque of merit from the Korean Red Cross (blood bank to help patients) for leading the campaign of saving lives through blood donation.

Without ceasing its movement, Shincheonji donated blood plasmas of the cured COVID-19 patients during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. This became a great help in developing the COVID-19 cure in Korea.

Shincheonji Volunteer also ran regular volunteer projects for organized volunteer services by last year (2023).

Special volunteer projects include: *“Visiting Health Doctor, **“Wall Story”, ***”Love Nation, Share Peace”, etc.

*Visiting Health Doctor: A free medical service that was began to help foreign workers in Korea and the disadvantaged

**Wall Story: A wall painting volunteer service to draw communication among the local residents and the regions

***Love Nation, Share Peace: A volunteer event to pay respects to the souls who died protecting the nation, and share peace that can be practiced in real life

Regular volunteer service projects include: *”The More, the Better”, *”Nature, Let’s Go Green”, ***”Little Finger”, and ****“Friends Together”, etc.

*The More, the Better: A project of sharing pet succulent pots with the local residents

**Nature, Let’s Go Green: An environment purification project

***Little Finger: A project to help communicate between the disabled and non-disabled

****Friends Together: A series of volunteer projects such as giving free haircut services, delivering briquettes (some houses that don’t provide gas heating systems, such as houses on steep hills, use briquettes to heat) to the disadvantaged, etc.

This year, Shincheonji Volunteer aims to put their all efforts into providing localized volunteer services to focus on regional problems and features and make the newer and brighter world.

What makes Shincheonji Volunteer keeps providing its various volunteer services? Shincheonji Volunteer introduced their goal is to carry out their missions to be the light and salt of society and to practice the spirit of loving neighbors as themselves.

Shincheonji Volunteer officials determined, “Heaven gives the light, rain, and air for free. Like we received those for free, we want to share for free. The spirit of volunteer of life we learned from heaven, we will shine every corner of the dark world and add warmth.” They added, “We’ve been sharing love to neighbors and serving the communities while finding the places where the help is needed in the society for past 38 years. We won’t hesitate to carry out the role of the light and salt.”
